Midi Templates
Templates will save you a lot of time because it has the full setup of all your instruments and controllers. A template is an empty midi file with no music in it, but it does have a full set of instruments already in place, set up in the track window. It also has a series of events in the beginning that sets the controllers to your liking.
The Pitch Bend page shows how the "Event Editor" window can be used to enter the necessary events to configure your controllers for the amount of Pitch bend that you desire. This will vary from song to song - but typically I use more than the default one-step maximum bend. The more bend you setup your template for - the more difficult it is to "draw" the bend accurately in the controllers window. So I choose a happy medium pitch bend level anywhere from 3 to 6.
Of course, you can use the same methods to set up the Main Volume, Expression, etc. The Event Editor shown is specific to the "Digital Orchestrator Pro" application - however, the Controllers used are standard for all midi.
Here is a good template for Rock, Pop, Rap, Punk, or variety bands with both metal and brass (Chicago). This would be a good place to start - use this template and then edit it to create your own templates. It takes a lot of work out of subsequent midi compilations.
