Feature Group D

The only Feature Group that offers 1+ dialing.

This Feature Group furnishes trunkside access in the End Offices, and it can be Direct Routed to End Offices or tandems.  FG D is the most technically advanced Feature Group, and it was designed specifically to meet the requirements of Equal Access. This is by far the most popular Feature group, and in fact, it makes up over 90% of all feature groups.

Feature Group D is a trunkside switching connection available in all End Offices. It is available for originating, terminating or two-way service. It may be ordered as a direct route to or from the End Office, or via the access tandem to or from the End Office. When call volume is expected to be high and the distance short, direct routing is recommended. When call volume is low, tandem routing is suggested.

In Feature Group D End Offices, end users identify their choice of carrier (known as their primary Interexchange Carrier). From
Qwest's point of view, these users are PIC'd to their primary carrier.  Whenever these end users call long distance from a business or residence using the 1+ dialing pattern, Feature Group D End Office switches recognize the PIC code of the end user and route that call to the proper carrier.  Only Feature Group D switching is equipped to handle the 1+ dialing option for all Interexchange Carriers.

Feature Groups B, and D are both trunkside connections and share the signaling characteristics of a trunk. And, both B and D can be provided with multifrequency address signaling (MF). Feature Group D, however, is the only class of service which can be provided with SS7 Out of Band Address Signaling. This digital type of signaling allows for much faster call completion than the rates available with the other Feature Groups. This is a further benefit of Feature Group D.

It's easy to see why Feature Group D is considered the premium class of service. It is widely used by carriers who need 1+ dialing service, international calling and offers many optional services.
