ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. In order to display certain characters or symbols within your HTML pages, you can use the same a special ASCII code. The codes below display the HTML code and the character when displayed on your web page. To use any of the characters displayed within the ASCII codes chart, copy & paste the HTML code to the left of the character you would like to use.

Browser support for some of these entities is quite poor (as you can see by the rectangles shown - where the symbol should shown), but recent browsers support most of the character entity references and decimal character references.  Only use those that your browser sees correctly !!!

To use the following codes:

For ASCII - hold down the ALT key and enter the "4-digit" code.  So you must add leading zeros from this HTML table, wherever there is not 4 digits.  For example, to enter the cent symbol into a Word or Notepad text document - the HTML code says:  &#169   -   so you would enter:   Alt-0169

For HTML, you can use the same code as ASCII, except you precede it with two characters, &#   -  just use the code in the table and enter it with either of these two methods:

from the table,  into the HTML view, not the Normal view of FrontPage - you do not need the semicolon.

in Frontpage Normal view, enter the code as ASCII with the Alt key - for example Alt-0169 for the cent symbol:

NOTE: HTML supports special codes, such as &copy for the copyright symbol.  However, browsers do not support these very well across the board, so if there is an ASCII code instead - use that with the preceding &#
