BlueTooth

IEEE 802.15.1

The name, "Bluetooth", oddly enough, was taken from a medieval Danish king, Harald Blaatand II or Bluetooth (940-981).  He was noted for unifying Denmark and Sweden.  Similarly . . . Bluetooth aims to unify wireless devices, as a connectivity standard.

The original development work was done at Ericsson in 1994 by Sven Mattison and Jaap Haartsen.  Later, several companies (Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba) created Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) - see www.bluetooth.com A group of Bluetooth promoters - 3Com, Lucent, Microsoft, Motorola led the way, and now there are several thousand members.
