How to Completely Delete Files without a Trace
Most people do not realize that it is possible to recover a deleted file even if your hard
disk has been reformatted using special forensic tools.
Your hard disk uses magnetism to store information and still retains traces of previous files. It's only by repeatedly
overwriting the file that all traces of it really disappear.
Here's how files can be cleaned off your drive without leaving a trace. This is defined by the Department of Defense 5220.22-M standard for wiping a drive or any portion of a drive clean:
1) Every single byte is overwritten by a pattern of bits in the form 01010101
2) Each byte is then overwritten by the inverse pattern of bits in the form 10101010
3) All bytes are then overwritten by a random pattern
4) Steps 1 - 3 are repeated three times.
5) After the overwrite process, the name of the file is changed to a random name and it is finally deleted.
This process results in the file being overwritten 9 times before it is finally deleted!
